Elvis crosses $150 million at the domestic box office

ElvisBaz Luhrmann’s biographical film about the king of rock ‘n’ roll crossed a landmark at the box office this weekend, shortly after hitting HBO Max. The movie is one of a handful of films that had a strong opening this summer, rather than just being made strong by a juggernaut. Top Gun: MaverickAnd while it barely hits $1 billion—it topped $150 million at the domestic box office this weekend—it’s still a solid hit for Warner Bros. Discovery, a studio desperately searching for the good news.

Tom Hanks and Austin Butler star in the movie, which has been much loved since its release in June. Made for $85 million, it’s making pretty good money at this point, but honestly with a movie like this, and a filmmaker like Luhrmann, it’s about the upcoming awards season like nothing else.

“I love biographies, but this isn’t really a biographical movie, is it? It’s really about, to me, America in the 50s, 60s, and 70s,” Luhrmann said during the film’s press release. “And if you want to talk about America in the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s at the center of culture, the good, the bad and the ugly is a character. [like] Elvis Presley.”

Like the way Shakespeare would take a historical figure like a king and explore a great topic, or Amadeus It’s not really about Mozart when you learn a lot about Mozart, it’s about jealousy,” Luhrmann explained. What this movie is about is America in those three eras – Elvis the rebellious, Elvis the highest-paid actor in Hollywood, and Elvis the living legend, the icon trapped in that hotel 10 minutes from here, by a guy named Colonel Tom Parker.”

Here’s the synopsis: “The film explores the life and music of Elvis Presley (Butler), and is seen through the prism of his complex relationship with his enigmatic director, Colonel Tom Parker (Hanks),” reads a Warner Bros synopsis. “The story delves into the complex dynamic between Presley and Parker over 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and the loss of innocence in America. The most important and influential people in Elvis’ life, Priscilla Presley (Olivia DeJong).”
